Romania’s Roșia Montană may lose its UNESCO World Heritage Site status before it is even granted: the Romanian government has suggested that a request to have the area declared protected may be withdrawn to allow for commercial mining.
Roșia Montană is a small Romanian town with a rich mining history dating all the way back to the Ancient Romans.
Canadian company, Gabriel Resources, wants access to the area for commercial mining purposes: If successful in their request, the open-pit gold mine would be the largest in Europe. The development of the area would include the destruction of 4 mountains, and relocation of approximately 6,000 residents, but, according to Mining.com, would “inject up to $24 billion into Romania’s economy”.
