Concerns have been raised regarding the impact that Agnico Eagle Mines’ new operation in Meadowbank, Nunavut, could have on local wildlife.
Agnico Eagle’s Whale Tail Pit will require the construction and use of an access road. According to an article published by CBC News several local authorities, including the Government of Nunavut, and the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA), question how traffic on the newly developed road will affect the region’s caribou.
In response to the raised concerns, Agnico Eagle has offered multiple solutions to ensure the safety of wildlife, including mobile protection measures and mitigation strategies.
No resolution has been met to date.
