Working outdoors can be good for you (for benefits associated with working outdoors, click here), but it’s important that you dress appropriately to protect yourself this winter season. Here’s a few tips on how to do so:
Wear Layers
As you begin physically exerting yourself, your body will warm up. It’s important that you wear layers to avoid overheating.
Tips
- Make sure your outer layer is wind and waterproof!
- Avoid cotton (when it gets wet, it will extract heat from the body) and goose down (since its insulation abilities are hindered when it gets wet)
Cover Your Hands & Feet
Keep your hands and fingers warm by wearing insulated mitts (since they are warmer than gloves), where practical. Make sure that feet and toes stay warm and dry, by wearing proper fitting insulated (and waterproof) boots.
Tips
- Extremities lose heat the fastest. Covering them with wind and waterproof materials will keep them (and you) warm!
- A well-fitting boot will have wiggle room and accommodate thick socks
Use Winter Wear that Works with PPE
It’s important to stay safe while you stay warm. If coveralls are required, wear a thermal insulated pair. Helmet liners can be safely worn under hard hats to keep your head and neck warm. Lined steel-toe boots are available.
Tips
- Always ensure that any PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is appropriate for the task at hand prior to commencing work
