1974 – The Metropolitan Toronto Zoo, also known as the Toronto Zoo officially opens. The construction project started in 1970 and would total $22 million. Construction included four main pavilions (African Rainforest, Americas, Australasia and Indo-Malaya), many indoor exhibits, 10 km of trails and all the supporting facility buildings. Upon its completion the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo would cover 287 hectares.
In addition to the $22 million spent on facilities a further $6 million was raised for the purchasing of animals and plant life.
