Maintaining Your Respirator

Respirators are critical personal protective equipment used to protect the user from airborne particulates, fumes, vapours, and gases.

To keep respirators in proper working condition (and to keep workers protected), it is imperative that they are properly maintained and stored.

Maintenance

Respirators require regular maintenance to ensure that it works safely and properly.

Cleaning & Disinfecting

Respirators should be cleaned and disinfected according to those outlined by the manufacturer.

Be sure to take the respirator apart to thoroughly wash all components. Ensure that the respirator is well-rinsed, and air dried prior to putting it back together.

Respirators should be cleaned regularly, and as often as necessary to prevent them from becoming unsanitary.

If your respirator is used by more than one user, it should be disinfected and cleaned after each use.

Inspection & Repair

Prior to using a respirator, it should be inspected for damage or defects. Check on and for:

• Connections
• Condition of all parts (including head straps, valves, cartridges and filters)
• Signs of damage/deterioration

Never use a damaged or defective respirator.

Storage

Respirators should be stored according to procedures outlined by the manufacturer. Ensure that the respirator is stored to prevent damage to the piece, including bending and crushing.

Store respirators in clean, dry storage areas.
