Who
What
I switched departments this year at Miller. It’s a great company, in that employees are given opportunities to advance or move around in their careers. Being such a large company, there are many choices to find the right fit if you are motivated.
After moving from the Quality Control Division, where I was a Compaction and CCIL Certified Aggregate Tech. I started with Operations.
Now I load and scale trucks, assist in dispatching local aggregate and float haulage, take and fill retail sales calls, look after the quarry yard, do time billing and payroll, as well as track external haulage numbers.
How Long
I’ve been in this position for about 2 months, but have admin and equipment experience as well as transportation experience that transferred.
Where
Being on the road had minimal appeal to me, I spent 10 years as an over the road driver and didn’t want to go back to being away all the time if I didn’t have to.
Now I go to the same office in Haileybury every morning, and any field work is within an hour of the office, allowing me to be home for dinner every night.
Why
I was in Ministry for the last 10 years, the last 5 as an Associate Pastor in Powassan, ON. When my wife, who also works for Miller (as does my son) was offered a transfer to the main office in New Liskeard, it seemed like a right choice for the family. I needed a change and the amount of different activities through the day appealed to me. I like to keep busy, but don’t like doing the same thing every day. This industry (paving/crushing/aggregates) is always changing. It’s fast paced and keeps my mind and body in motion. So far, I love it.
For Fun
For fun, I play hockey all I can. This season, we got into trail riding on our ATVs and have really enjoyed that. We also vacation in the Caribbean every year.
