I have been working with VALE for approximately 20 years. I have been a Supervisor for approximately 6 years.
Where
VALE- Garson Mine
Why
Fluke. I was nearing the end of high school, and had chosen to study as an optician. One of our class projects was to create a documentary. Since my father worked for INCO (now VALE) at the time, I thought that I would showcase the Stobie mine.
He arranged a tour with one of the Underground Supervisors. I was impressed at how many aspects of the mining industry that there actually are. It was completely different than what I had envisioned; not like the tourist mine at all.
We drove in a full-sized Hummer, toured an underground garage, saw blasting operations and haulage equipment like remote controlled scoops.
The next day, I changed my field of study and enrolled in the Mining Engineering Technology program in college.
The opportunities that I have gained while in this industry are incredible. I was recently asked to join the Mining Industry Human Resources Councils Standing Committee on Mining Essentials; a program that introduces different aspects of the mining industry to Aboriginal Peoples. Being Aboriginal myself, this is a topic that I am passionate about.
For Fun
My family and I like to travel. We also enjoy the outdoors, cooking, and entertaining. Occasionally, we travel to different festivals, where we operate our gourmet food stand for the weekend.
