In today’s society sleep is regarded as somewhat of a luxury, and is often put on the backburner in favour of more screen-time. More and more adults are lacking the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night.
Here are a few good reasons why you should call it a night:
Lower Your Risk of Illness & Disease
Sleep deficiency is directly linked to an increased likelihood of diabetes, high blood pressure, and strokes. Your lifetime risk of a heart attack is 50% higher if your average sleep is less than six hours a night.
Control Your Weight
Lack of sleep is related to an increase in hunger and appetite. If you sleep for 6 hours a night, you can feel up to 25% hungrier. You are also 30% more likely to become obese than someone who gets a good night’s sleep.
Drive Safer
Sleep deficiency makes drivers less able to pay attention to the road and slows reaction time. 20% of all car accidents in the United States are a result of drowsy driving.
Studies have shown that driving while drowsy can slow reaction time as much as driving drunk.
Tips to Get Some Sleep
- Make sleep a priority
- Set your alarm for the same time everyday. Create a regularity for your body
- Stop using electronic devices 15-20 minutes before bedtime
- Wind down before bed: dim the lights, read a book, or just relax
Sweet dreams!
