2. Workers to ramp up strike action at Canadian mine in Mexico
Miners at the Media Luna mine have been on strike for 11 days. They are demanding better wages and the right to join the National Union of Mine, Metal, Steel and Allied Workers of the Mexican Republic. 100 armed Mexican agents have been deployed to the site.
3. Colombian police dismantle highest illegal gold mine in the country
It took months of training to mount an operation to reach and destroy the illegal mine which was located on a 2,800-meter mountain. The mine has been polluting the drinking water of nearby towns and is suspected of being run by a known criminal organization.
4. Surrey construction worker hailed as hero after toddler nearly drowns
A mother found her toddler floating in a pond in their backyard. Frantic, she took her daughter inside the house where a construction crew was working. One of the workers performed CPR and the child is expected to make a full recovery.
5. Skills shortage tightens around UK construction sector
“Britain’s shortage of surveyors, bricklayers and other construction workers is holding back building work just at the time when the country needs more houses and infrastructure.”
