1880 – Construction begins on Newfoundland’s (NL) first railway system. The line will eventually run from St. John’s to Hall Bay, NL. It would eventually stretch 1,458 km, making it the largest narrow-gauge railway system in North America. In 1988 the line would eventually merge into the Canadian National railway (CN).
