1858 – International cooperation leads to the first telegraph cable line between Newfoundland, Canada to Valencia, Ireland. The lines were laid by the ships HMS Agamemnon and USS Niagara. On August 12, 1858 the first transmission tests began. The first official telegram is a letter of congratulation from Queen Victoria to US President James Buchanan.
