Avison Electrical is a full-service electrical contractor located in North Bay, Ontario. With over 30-years experience in industrial, commercial, mining, and residential wiring, Hard Hat Hunter was excited at the opportunity to sit down with Owner/Vice President, Adam Avison to discuss apprenticeships.
SD: Does Avison Electrical hire apprentices?
AA: Avison Electrical does take on apprentices. In the past 6-7 years, we’ve had 9 apprentices, 6 of which have moved up to journeyman status.
What do you look for in prospective apprentices?
AA: I can only speak for Avison Electrical on this matter, but for us, we like to see people from the Pre-Electrical Program. Besides that, we look for candidates that we believe can fit in with our existing team.
What makes an apprentice an attractive addition to an organization?
AA: Work ethic and showing an employer that you are dedicated to your apprenticeship. You also demonstrate the ability that you are not afraid to learn new things.
What can apprentice do to increase their odds of being noticed and/or hired by a firm?
One of the biggest things we recommend to anyone interested in an apprenticeship position with Avison Electrical is the completion of the Pre-Electrical program. This does three things: it shows us that you’re committed to the field, it gives you credit hours towards your apprenticeship, and also gives you some basic tool time experience.
Why is it important for organizations today to consider taking on apprentices?
AA: If we don’t take apprentices on today, there will not be any journeymen tomorrow. We need new people in the trades everyday to help rep16lace retirees. It’s as simple as that.
