There has been a recent worldwide push to encourage women to participate in the skilled trades sector. As a result, the industry has seen a rise in the number of female entrants to the field globally.
However, according to Newshub, New Zealand is still “desperate” for women to consider the trades. More than 11,000 women were have reported to sign up for skilled trades training and apprenticeships, from carpentry to plumbing to electrical, a rise of more than 50% in the past five years.
The Industry Training Federation, the “collective voice for industry training and apprenticeships in New Zealand” states that it is up to educational institutions and employers to encourage women to pursue careers in these sectors by showcasing the varied opportunities that exist within them.
