When working alongside traffic there are many hazards to be aware of; which often varies on location and conditions. As a supervisor, ensure that all staff members are aware of potential hazards that may occur and as an employee be sure that your supervisor has informed you of potential dangers. The following is a list of a few things to look out for when working near traffic:
- Make sure that your tools and equipment are located in a safe zone where no one will run into.
- Be on the lookout for things other than vehicles such as bicyclist and pedestrians and ensure they have a clear and accessible path.
- Keep an eye on other work sites within the area such as traffic control.
- Be aware of larger vehicles for example, transports that may not be as agile or have may not have as many visible areas in their mirrors.
- Always be aware of reckless drivers.
- Keep in mind, trucks, buses and other large vehicles going by may block the vision of signage
- It’s also important to consider different weather conditions and how that might affect drivers for instance, rain, sun, fog or slippery roads.
- Try and work facing the traffic
When working around traffic, it’s important to always be aware of your surroundings along with the constant changing conditions such as weather, rush hour, accidents, traffic control, disobedient pedestrians etc. Always wear protective and visible gear and ensure that you are properly informed about all the potential hazards that may occur.
