Scaffolding is a temporary structure typically used on the outside of a building to permit access to build and/or repair it.
Prior to Use
Prior to using scaffolding, inspect the scaffold to ensure that:
- Base is level and adjusted
- All braces are in place and locking devices are secured
- Planks, decks, and guardrails are properly installed
Selecting Scaffolding
Use the appropriate type of scaffolding for the task and requirements at hand. To properly select scaffolding, you should know:
- The weight of workers, tools, materials, and equipment
- Site & anticipated weather conditions
- Type of work that will be completed
- Requirements for traffic (through/under scaffolding)
General Guidelines
When using scaffolding:
- Remove tripping and slipping hazards from the scaffolding, including surplus materials, debris, snow, and ice
- Only use the scaffold to its rated working load; don’t overload scaffolding frames or platforms
- Never work on scaffolding during storms or high winds
- Never use scaffolding near overhead wires
