Falling objects are one of the primary causes of injury on construction sites. More than 50,000 “struck by falling object” recordables occur every year in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Many of these injuries are preventable. Here’s what you can do to prevent injuries from falling objects:
Be Smart About Moving Materials
Ensure that any moved materials are safely secured to provide stability and keep objects from falling. It’s also important to ensure that loads are never lifted over workers’ heads to further avoid safety hazards.
Practice Good Housekeeping
Keeping a worksite clear of debris is a great practice- not only does it keep the area clean and tidy, it also reduces the odds of slips, trips, falls, and falling objects.
Wear Personal Protective Equipment
Make sure to use your last line of defence: PPE. Head and foot protection can protect workers in the event that an object does fall.
