A significant remediation project on the site of a contaminated mine northeast of Whitehorse is moving to the next phase. Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada said May 31 it has awarded Pelly Construction Ltd. a $44.4 million contract for work at Faro Mine — an abandoned lead-zinc mine that opened in 1969 and operated for about 30 years. The open pit mine about 15 kilometres outside the small town of Faro in central Yukon is one of the largest contaminated sites in the country.
