Additive manufacturing, also referred to as 3D printing, is an emerging technology that is anticipated to have a major impact on the trades, mining, and construction sectors. With new technology comes new potential safety hazards. Read on to ensure that you’re protected when using additive manufacturing technology.
Personal Protective Equipment
Airborne Emissions
Sometimes during the additive manufacturing process, nanoparticles can be emitted into the air. These emissions can be damaging to the lungs and brain. Ensure those in the printing area are wearing appropriate respiratory protection. Additionally ensure that working areas are well-ventilated.
Skin Irritants
Some metals and thermoplastics used in the printing process can irritate skin. Wear fitted, long-sleeved shirts, as well as gloves to minimize skin contact.
Fire Safety
During the manufacturing process, always have the appropriate class of fire extinguisher readily available for emergency use.
Pinch Points
There are many moving parts during the manufacturing process which may be pinch points. Never remove, alter, or override safety guards or devices on the additive manufacturing technology. Additionally, never open the printer once the printing process has begun.
