What is a Combustible Liquid?
Combustible liquids, are liquids that ignite easily and burn extremely quickly. As defined in the construction standard of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association), they are: “any liquid having a flash point at or above 140°F and below 200°F”.
What are some examples of Combustible Liquids?
Combustible liquids include:
- Diesel fuel
- Kerosene
- Pine oil
Handling Combustible Liquids
- Consult the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) to determine appropriate handling instructions
- Understand all emergency procedures and safe work practices prior to handling the combustible liquid
- Use all required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Prior to use of Combustible Liquids
- Ensure work area is well-ventilated
- Remove all possible ignition sources from work area (including sparks from electrical tools, open flames, hot surfaces, and smoking).
Working with Combustible Liquids
- Use all required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- Use the smallest amount of liquid possible to complete the task at hand
- Report spills immediately (clean them up, if possible)
- NEVER use combustible liquids for anything other than their intended uses
