There are many potential hazards associated with working on construction site. These hazards are either eliminated or reduced by implementing safety policies and procedures (such as mandatory use of personal protective equipment, identifying all potential hazards, and safe work practices).
Many of the same inherent safety hazards also apply to site visitors. Consider the following precautions to ensure the safety of non-workers at a worksite:
Protective Gear
When on any construction site, whether to work or visit, personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used. Ensure that any site visitors are wearing hard hats, steel-toe boots, high-visibility safety vests, and any other mandatory PPE to suit the conditions of the worksite.
Guided Tour
No site visitors should be left alone on a worksite for safety purposes. Ensure that a competent worker remains with any visitor for the duration of their stay on site.
Sign In, Sign Out
Ensure that all site visits are recorded. In the event of an emergency, it is crucial to know who is on a worksite. Ensure details such as visitor name, time in, time out, and reason for visit are documented.
Restricted Access
There are some worksites (and some events) that are not visitor friendly. If having a visitor on site poses any additional safety hazards to untrained (or uncertified) visitors, access to the site should be denied.
Take precautions to ensure that your worksite is safe for all- workers and visitors alike!
