With the current trades population aging (and consequently beginning to plan their retirement) getting an apprenticeship is not always a walk in the park. Here are a few tips on how to secure an apprenticeship:
Network Early
In this industry, who you know may have an impact on your career. Put your best foot forward and make sure you network with others in the trades. My advice: befriend, ask for advice, always be polite. You never know where a good conversation may lead you!
Have a Kickass Resume
Your resume is typically a prospective employer’s first professional impression of you. Make it count! Chances are that any firm you apply to, will have received numerous resumes for the same position. This is a chance to make your mark. Your resume should cover your training and/or education, your skillset, and your accomplishments. Ensure that your resume is free from any errors (grammatical and semantical).
Embrace Opportunity
Treat every job application and interview (even if they are failed attempts) as an opportunity to self-improve. Learn from your mistakes, refine your presentation skills, hone your resume. Flip the negative into a positive and keep pushing forward.
