Pesticides are an effective tool to control weeds, insect infestation, and crop disease. However, without protection, exposure to pesticides can result in serious illness or death.
Pesticide Use May Require a Respirator
Pesticides can contaminate the air—some stay in the atmosphere for a short period of time, while others can settle into the ground, be broken down by sunlight, or dissipate. Workers are often required to use respirators as a personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to these contaminants.
Select the Appropriate Protection
Choose the right respirator for your task. Respirators vary in function. Ensure that the respirator that you are using provides the appropriate protection. Be sure to consult manufacturer’s guidelines.
Get a Proper Fit
Wearing a respirator incorrectly is dangerous. If the seal around the nose and mouth is not tight, you can be exposed to airborne contaminants. Fit tests ensure that respirators are properly sealed.
Inspect Prior to Use
Like all other PPE, respirators must be in good working condition to properly function and protect workers against hazards. Ensure the respirator is free from faults or defects (such as cracks, rips or broken seams) prior to each use.
Properly Maintain, Clean & Store
After use, rinse respirators in clean, warm water and wipe with a disinfectant. Air-dry in a clean area. Store respirators in a clean, dry container or plastic bags. Replace filters, canisters, and cartridges as required.
