What
I am retired after working in the rail industry for 42 years. During my years at the railway, I worked in a number of positions that included Telegrapher, Trainman, Conductor, Locomotive Engineer, Trainmaster, Chief Transportation Officer, Chief Mechanical Officer, Director Rail Infrastructure and Vice President. While in the role as Vice President, I was responsible for all rail-related operations over 750 miles of track, and approx 500 employees. Rail operations are challenging in cold and hot weather climates, that included Canadian Shield rock formations, farmland, and lowlands or wetlands comprised mostly of muskeg.
For 16 years I also owned and operated a business that included a 68 seat restaurant, a full service gas station and convenience store.
Where
In my early years with the railway, I traveled all across Northeastern Ontario working in a number of rail-served communities. Luckily for me, the majority of my career, was spent working out of a small railroad town in northern Ontario, which also happened to be my hometown. In the latter part of my career, I relocated to work out of the railway’s headquarters in North Bay Ontario, where I reside today.
Why
My hometown was considered a railway town, with little else for employment and not wanting to move, career choices where limited. For me, in the mid 70’s it was either work for the railway or move to southern Ontario. I chose a career with the railway and have never looked back.
For Fun
My hobbies include 4-5 hours a week, year-round at a local fitness club. Riding my Harley Davidson on trips into the United States, and recently I have taken up road cycling during the summer months so I try to get out a few times a week and put on the KM’s.
