A locate is a means used to identify the position of underground utility lines. These positions are communicated in two ways:
- A document which outlines the proposed work area and the utility line, if applicable.
- An on-site mark, typically in the form of labeled stakes, flags, or high-visibility paint marks, used to define the utility line and its limits
When to get a Locate
It is often necessary to dig around underground utility lines. When a contractor proposes a dig deeper than 15cm, a locate is required1 to reduce the risk of damaging a utility line.
How to get a Locate
Any company who anticipates digging requires a locate. Prior to the dig, the personal responsible for the work (typically the contractor) is required to ensure that utility locates are in place in the digging areas. To obtain a locate, contact your local utility authority.

If there are no utility lines
If there are no utility lines in the proposed digging area, a written confirmation from the locate authority is required as proof.
Additional Information
- Locates should be acquired at least 5 days prior to commencement of project
- Locates must be (physically) in-hand prior to the commencement of any digging
- Ensure that anyone completing the dig (by hand or machine operator) has a copy of the locates
- Locate markings must be maintained and kept visible
- Ensure that everyone on the work site is aware of the presence of all underground utility lines
- Be sure to watch for locate expirations!
